The seaside is the cheapest luxury I know — provided you outsmart the fare. After years of escaping to the coast on a writer's budget, here is the easy way to earn your time by the water: pay less to get there, then spend your savings on slow mornings.

Tickets: timing beats loyalty

Book the unpopular hours — the 6am sailing, the Tuesday flight, the bus that arrives before the cafés open. Off-peak fares routinely cost half the headline price, and you gain the best part of the day: an empty beach and first choice of sunbed, bench or dune.

Sleep cheap, wake rich

Family-run guesthouses a street back from the front cost a third of the sea-view hotels and serve better breakfasts. Hostels with late checkout, monastery stays, house-sits — the coast is full of beds that cost little and give much.

“Pay less to get there, then spend the savings on slow mornings — the arithmetic of the coast.”

The slow way in

My favourite arrival is on foot or by local ferry: you see the place assemble itself from the water instead of teleporting into it. Fares, routes and harbour timetables for my regular escapes are in The Seas collection.
